Tips to Conserve Energy

Customers can help to conserve energy during peak demand times to reduce the demand on our system.

Peak demand times on PEI happen between 6 and 10 a.m. as Islanders are waking up to start their days, and again from 4 to 8 p.m., as everyone is arriving home from work and school.

You can help manage the peak energy demand and alleviate the load on our system by following these energy conservation tips:

  • Avoid using large appliances such as dishwashers, ovens and dryers. Use the microwave, air fryer, or toaster oven instead.
  • Shift non-essential activities, like laundry, to when power demand is lower.
  • If you have an electric water heater, limit the use of hot water as much as possible.
  • Turn off all unnecessary lights and unplug any electronics or appliances not in use.
  • Charge electric vehicles overnight.
  • Select the lowest comfortable thermostat setting. Your home heating systems work harder when the temperature is colder outside.
  • If it is extremely cold outside, be prepared to use other sources of heating available in your home as heat pumps become less efficient during extreme cold temperatures.

If your power goes off, turn off appliances and other electrical devices that may have been on when the power went out, so there’s not an immediate surge on the system when power is restored. In the event of a power outage, have an emergency plan for your household.
